The kill-switch protects against IP leaks: if the tunnel drops for a moment, the device blocks all traffic instead of falling back to the open connection. Nothing goes out unprotected. On iPhone and Android this is enabled through WireGuard's On-Demand feature.
The WireGuard protocol is extremely lightweight and fast, with minimal impact on speed. Since traffic passes through the company's exit point, there may be a small latency variation depending on the server distance — imperceptible for most uses.
